Transpower operates New Zealand’s high-voltage national grid, connecting generation sources with cities, towns, and major industrial users across the country. Reliable and accurate metering across grid exit points (GXPs) is critical for settlement, operational analysis, and system transparency.

To support the modernisation of its revenue metering infrastructure, Transpower undertook a nationwide upgrade program to replace legacy meters installed across substations throughout New Zealand

The Challenge

Many of the legacy revenue meters installed in the early 1990s were reaching the end of their operational life and lacked the capability required for modern grid analytics and power quality monitoring.
Transpower required a solution that could:
  • Replace ageing metering infrastructure across multiple substations
  • Provide high-accuracy revenue metering
  • Capture power quality and event data
  • Integrate seamlessly with existing SCADA and operational systems

The Solution

Quasar worked with Schneider Electric technologies to deploy PowerLogic ION8800 rack-mounted meters across the national grid.
These advanced meters provide high-accuracy revenue metering combined with extensive monitoring capabilities including:
  • Voltage excursion monitoring
  • Power factor and frequency analysis
  • Power quality monitoring
  • Integration with existing SCADA and enterprise systems

Schneider Electric PowerLogic ION8800 meters coupled with EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME). This solution provides the data required for capacity planning, stability analysis, regulatory compliance and energy settlement
