Transpower is the owner and operator of the New Zealand's National Grid – the high voltage transmission network of lines and substations connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across the country. To 'keep the lights on 24 hours a day 7 days a week' Transpower needs to monitor substations closely, provide control, monitor operational data, and feed this data upstream to National SCADA.

Power was cut to large areas of the North Island on Tuesday 13th December 2011 by a fault at the 1448 MW Huntly power station. While the cause of the problem is not known (at the time of this news item) its effect was widely felt by power being suddenly disconnected to more than 200,000 consumers in areas from Wellington to Auckland and further north. The incident triggered load shedding to retain the balance between generation and demand and to protect the national grid from collapse. Quasar’s FCAS application is installed at numerous locations around NZ and captured the 47.6Hz event. The resulting information shows the grid frequency immediately prior to the event and for the period following. This post period shows the connected generation’s response to the event as it begins to recover the frequency to 50Hz.
The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has recently installed a Quasar energy management system in their Wellington offices, to demonstrate the value of monitoring energy use. The system features an energy monitoring display using PowerLogic ION Enterprise software, which gathers, analyses, stores and displays all energy data in a user-friendly format. The display provides an easy, cost-effective way of tracking energy use in the offices and saves on administrative costs as no manual meter reading is involved. It has also been tailored to allow EECA to compare energy use between its two different office floors. Mike Underhill, Chief Executive, says the system allows EECA to identify opportunities to refine existing energy saving measures and demonstrate the potential for improving energy use in an office environment. “The energy monitoring display has enabled EECA to identify a series of small improvements that combined add-up to a noticeable saving year on year. The project also provides a valuable demonstration model that can be viewed by commercial building owners or tenants.” Anyone interested in viewing the system should contact Senior Relationship Manager Mike Bourke at EECA, email [email protected] or phone (04) 470 2227. ION7550/ION7650 high end revenue and power quality meter meters are certified by KEMA to meet the IEC 61850 specifications. Applications:
Multi-vendor Benefits:
IEC 61850 was developed as a utility substation automation protocol, enabling easy incorporation of products from multiple vendors in the same SCADA system. Overview of ION7550/ION7650 meter IEC 61850 functionality:
ION7550 - with Ethernet card and 5MB memory option ION7650 - with Ethernet card and 5MB memory option Upgrade existing Meters: It is possible to upgrade installed meters to support IEC 61850 protocol. Contact Quasar for details. The new ION8650 advanced revenue & power quality meter was recently awarded ‘Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010, Schedule 10.1, Code of Practice 10.4’ compliance with this certification, these meters are now ready to be sold into Revenue compliant installations within New Zealand. Used to monitor electric energy provider networks, service entrances and substations, PowerLogic ION8650 meters are ideal for independent power producers and co-generation applications that need to accurately measure energy bidirectionally in both generation and stand-by modes. These meters give utilities the tools to manage complex energy supply contracts that include commitments to power quality. Integrate them with our ION Enterprise™ operations software or other energy management and SCADA systems through multiple communication channels and protocols, including our PrimeRead MDM solutions as well as Itron MV-90 and Stark RT.
Realtime Load Monitoring Realtime monitoring of Peak Load by Northpower’s ION7700 and ION7650 meters became hot news in the Northern Advocate newspaper following a recent cold snap. Mike Hayes, Commercial Manager - Network of Northpower reports that the cold weather event imposed a peak load on Northpower’s network, and that the data from their ION meters enabled them to control peak demand and keep a close watch on events as they progressed during the day. Quasar’s Unique Solution
Quasar supplied ION meters and an ION Enterprise Energy Monitoring system in 2008 which it supports remotely. This ensures that Northpower always has reliable, real-time and historical network information readily at hand. Our products & solutions will be depicted in a control room environment at the EEA 2011 Conference & Trade Exhibition to compliment the conference's theme of 'Resilient, Intelligent & Sustainable Energy'.
